Distribution in Turkmenistan and Worldwide:
The steppe eagle is a migratory bird widely distributed across the steppes of Eurasia and the deserts and foothills of Turkmenistan. It inhabits open landscapes such as deserts and mountain foothills.
Population and Trends:
Recent monitoring shows variable numbers, with significant counts near the Köpetdag Mountains and other regions. Major threats include collisions with power lines, food shortages, and drought.
Biological Features:
This species is migratory and winters in the southern parts of Turkmenistan. It migrates during spring (March-April) and autumn (September-November). Its diet includes rodents, birds, reptiles, and occasionally carrion.
Conservation Actions:
Protected under Turkmenistan’s Red Data Book since 1985 and listed by international conventions. Conservation efforts focus on reducing bird mortality on power lines and increasing habitat protection and monitoring.
