The Hypocolius ampelinus is a rare and vulnerable bird species crucial for preserving the gene pool of Turkmenistan and Central Asia. It is the sole representative of its genus and family and classified as Vulnerable (VU).
Habitat and distribution:
It inhabits riparian tugai forests along the Tejen, Murgab, and Kushka rivers, and is also found in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Middle Eastern countries.
Biology and characteristics:
Arriving in April, it breeds in May-June, laying up to 5 eggs. It mainly feeds on berries. Protection of tugai forests and fire prevention efforts are essential for maintaining its population.
Conservation efforts:
Listed in the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan since 1985 and on international conservation lists. Strengthening fire control and raising public awareness are critical conservation measures.
