Saraght Babaev: Renowned Sculptor of Turkmenistan
Saraght Babaev, a prominent sculptor, was born in 1948 in the Sarakhs etrap of the Akhal region. From 1970 to 1974, he studied sculpture at the Turkmen State Special Art School, under the guidance of Bayram Atdayev. He continued his education at the Moscow State Academic Institute of Fine Arts, named after V.I. Surikov, from 1974 to 1980, working in the studio of M.F. Baburin.
Babaev is known for his monumental and easel sculptures, created from granite, wood, bronze, and marble. His works span a wide range of genres, with national motifs present in sculptures such as "Mother," "Turkmen Girl," and "Portrait of a Young Man."
In the portraits created in the 1990s, the artist captures significant generalization and creates vivid, realistic, and striking images. His works such as the portrayal of the student Sona, or psychological portraits of his son Murad, and fellow villagers Muратгельды, are made with great finesse.
Babaev's masterpieces like "Alty Karlyev," "Chary Amangeldiev," "Izzat Klychev," and "Babasary Annammuradov" depict characters in moments of intellectual or emotional tension, aiming to express the creative process. At the same time, the artist focuses on enhancing the inner strength and outward movement of the figures, giving them more dynamic expression.
Sculptures like "In Memory of Bakhshi Orazgeldy Ilyasov," "Migration," and "Memories of My Mother" transform small-scale works into monumental pieces.
A dedicated educator, Babaev contributes to the development of young sculptors in the country's art schools and workshops. He is also actively involved in creating monumental monuments across Turkmenistan, helping nurture the next generation of sculptors who freely express their unique creative individuality.
In recent years, Babaev's significant works reflect historical memories of past thinkers and national heroes. His mastery lies in skillfully using surface beauty while bringing deeper life to the images. The texture of his works is always powerful and plays with light and shadow, as seen in "Fate" and "Echoes of Centuries." These sculptures combine strength and monumentality with elegance and grace.
His works preserve the richness of the inner world of sculpture, conveying both intensity and romantic unity.
Saraght Babaev's creative inspiration is flourishing. His relentless quest for new artistic materials keeps him active, constantly pushing boundaries and introducing fresh ideas to contemporary audiences.
The famous sculptor has received numerous prestigious awards, including the "For Love of the Homeland" and "Courage" medals, the "Magtymguly Pyragy" and "Turkmenistan's Independence 20th Anniversary" medals, and the "Galkynyş" order.
