Status. Category V (DD). Data Deficient species.
Importance of the taxon for gene pool preservation. Monotypic genus representative. The southern subspecies B.o. saharae Reichenow, 1892 inhabits most of Turkmenistan, while the typical northern form B.o. oedicnemus Linnaeus, 1758 inhabits the western part of the country.
Distribution. The lowlands of Turkmenistan — the Caspian plains (nominative subspecies), the piedmont of Kopetdag, the Karakum Desert, Murgab-Tejen interfluve, basins of the Amudarya, Murgab, and Tejen rivers . Outside Turkmenistan — Europe, North Africa, South Asia
Habitat. Open dry areas — clay-saline semi-deserts, takyrs, rarely fixed sands, and edges of cultural landscapes; always near water.
Number and trends. In the first half of the 20th century, it was commonly found and numerous in some places [1,3]. In spring 2011, two specimens were recorded on the left bank of the Amudarya ; on April 22, 2011, one specimen at Lake Zengibaba ; on April 26, 2014, four specimens at the Altyn Asyr Turkmen lake, Akyaila site on April 29, 2014, one specimen at Yedikhovuz Sanctuary. in May 2017, four specimens (2 adults and 2 chicks) at Mashrykajy site in Sarygamysh Sanctuary .
Biological peculiarities. Nesting and migrating species. Nocturnal. Breeds in separate pairs on the ground. The nest is a simple hole, usually under a bush, lined with dry grass. Clutch contains two eggs; chicks hatch in the second half of April. Birds require drinking water. Mainly feed on insects (dor beetles Geotrupes, darkling beetles Tenebrionidae, orthopterans), worms, and small lizards.
Conservation actions taken. Listed in the IUCN Red List (Category LC). Included in the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan since 2011. Part of the habitat is protected in Gaplangyr, Badkhyz, Amudarya, and Hazar State Nature Reserves, and Meane-Chaache.
