Merv- the Heart of the Silk Road

The ancient Turkmen city of Merv (Mary) used to be the world’s biggest city. The Silk Road metropolis of Merv in modern Turkmenistan. Destroyed during Mongolian invasion to the Central Asia and never fully recovered back.

Tour Program

Day 1: Arrival Ashgabat

Arrival in Ashgabat by air. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Ashgabat

After breakfast We'll start with a city tour, morning drive to visit Nissa fortress -the Sanctuary of Parthian Kings. (UNESCO), Independence Park, Neutrality monument,Alem-entertainment center in Ashgabat, with tallest indoor Ferris wheel in the world, Wedding Palacу etc. Overnight in the hotel.

Day 3: Ashgabat-Mary

Early morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Mary. Upon arrival we'll take our 4x4 vehicle and head towards to Gonur-depe, partly on unpaved tracks in approximately 2,5 hours to the excavation site. Detailed excursion on site. Picnic lunch Return back to Mary. Visit local History Museum.

Day 4: Mary-Ashgabat

After breakfast We'll start with drive to Ancient Merv (UNESCO). Detailed excursion on site. Transfer to airport for the evening flight back to Ashgabat. Transfer to hotel. Overnight in hotel.

Day 5: Ashgabat departure

Morning transfer to airport for international flight.

My friend and I took a tour to Merv and Darvaza gas crater in May 2025. Oraz and G were brilliant guides with great English. Both vehicles were comfortable and very well maintained. Fascinating sights, must visit.
